The Gut–Skin Axis: How the Gut and Skin Are Connected

One of the most active areas of microbiome research is the gut–skin axis: the two-way relationship between the health of your gut and the health of your skin. This page is an educational overview of what that research describes, and where a live L. reuteri yoghurt fits into a gut-focused routine.

What is the gut–skin axis?

The gut–skin axis is the term researchers use for the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the skin. Reviews describe it as a network driven by the immune system, systemic inflammation, and the metabolites produced by gut microbes. In simple terms: the balance of microbes in your gut is being studied for the way it may influence processes, particularly inflammation, that also affect the skin, and vice versa.

What the research explores

A growing body of research has explored associations between gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis) and a range of skin conditions. Review papers in this field note that dysbiosis and increased intestinal permeability have been studied as contributing factors in inflammatory skin conditions, and that the gut microbiome influences skin through systemic immunity, inflammatory responses, and metabolic pathways.

It is important to be clear about what this research is: it describes associations and proposed mechanisms, and it points toward gut-microbiome balance as an area of interest for skin health. It is an active, evolving field , not a settled set of conclusions, and not a basis for treating any skin condition.

Where inflammation comes in

A recurring theme in gut–skin research is inflammation. The prevailing model is that when the gut microbiome is out of balance, it can contribute to low-grade systemic inflammation, and researchers are studying how that systemic inflammatory state relates to the skin. This is why so much gut–skin research focuses on supporting a balanced gut microbiome as the starting point, the same balance our strains are studied in connection with (see our theory of gut dysbiosis).

LVLV and the skin: what the research on ATCC PTA 6475 shows

One of our strains has a particularly interesting, though early, research connection to skin. LVLV is fermented with L. reuteri ATCC PTA 6475, the same strain studied in relation to the gut–brain axis and oxytocin. In a well-known animal study, this strain was observed to enhance skin wound-healing in mice, a finding the researchers linked to oxytocin. Related animal research has also explored effects on skin thickness and quality.

These findings come from animal studies, and whether they translate to skin benefits in humans is not established, clinical studies are lacking. We share the research because it is genuinely interesting and because it is part of the story of this strain, not as a claim that our yoghurt will change your skin.
